One thing that has been established beyond doubt is that working out and staying physically active is most essential in a person’s life if he or she intends to stay fit and healthy. Having said this, it is also important to state that people have to be wise about exercise.

What does being wise involve in the light of exercise? It only means that there are a number of parameters to keep in sight when planning out workout regimens, some of which are discussed below.

Exercise and age –

Exercises should ideally be planned out according to people’s age. The bones, muscles and nerves all tend to suffer as a person grows older. Straining the body with vigorous exercises at an advanced age can lead to irrevocable damages.

For instance, it would hardly do for a typical 70 year old to strenuously workout at the gym! Instead, walking in a park or going for a gentle swim might be a better idea.

Workouts and health condition –

When someone is considering a workout plan, it would be rational to take the current health condition into account. The Dos and Don’ts have to be kept in mind while drawing up the training schedule.

Say, someone has had a shoulder pull and has been advised not to lift heavy weights or jerk the shoulder hard. Then rigorous weight training perhaps is not suitable for him. He should probably opt for something like running and doing simple Pilates.

Exercise and perseverance –

Many people start their workout regimen with total enthusiasm and commitment. But several of them drop out within a few days. Why does this happen?

One reason could be over exertion. Too much exercise at a single go serves only to strain and injure the body and causes the individual to give up the training idea altogether. It is vital to increase workout duration and intensity slowly and steadily.

Another reason people stray from the path of exercise is that the activity they have chosen simply does not hold their interest. For example, say a person just does not care to jog around in a park. Then there is no point in her taking this up as part of her workout when there are other options she could enjoy. So, people should devote time and pick out exercises that would suit their tastes and individual personalities.

Ultimate goal of training –

The kind of exercises a person takes up and the time and intensity of workouts have to ideally match up with his or her ultimate fitness goal. If a person has to lose weight, then aerobics and weight training could do the trick. But if a person wants chiselled abs, he should probably take up Pilates and abs crunches.

Diet and exercise –

Folks would do well to remind themselves that exercise coupled with nutritious & healthful food can do them a world of good. Gorging on unhealthy food and then trying to compensate with exercises is likely to lead only to frustration and hampered results.

The inference is that people should consider various points before beginning or continuing their exercise schedules to maximize effectiveness.

Eating right isn’t hard. Well, it is not as hard as say running a marathon or building a self generating motor. For some people bad habits are going to be a pain to try and quit, but remember there are people who have been smoking for years and they quit that so if they can kick their cig addiction then you should be able to kick your crappy diet.

Accountability.

Yes I know, accountability is something we all hate. Most of us, about 70 percent of the US population according to the American Heart Association, would much rather ignore our torpid bodies and deny any accountability for what we eat. You don’t become healthy or fit by ignoring accountability.

In a study down among women with journals they had some write down what they ate and the others not. As you probably would guess, the women who recorded what they were ingesting started to lose weight. Basically just being aware of what you put into your body helps. Start becoming accountable for what you eat.

What you do is a big factor too. You aren’t going to drop weight by laying around, well, maybe you will if you starve yourself. Lets go the healthy route and just do some physical activity. Get yourself a physically demanding activity. Become accountable for what you do.

Start Now

Why can’t we just ignore it and wait for it to go away. We don’t lose weight by waiting for fat to leave, we don’t find better opportunities by waiting, we have to get out there and find them for ourselves and in some cases we have have to force better situations upon ourselves.

Starting now means that at this very moment you are going to make a resolve. Decide what it will be, will you take accountability and start moving down the path to fit ville? Big decision I know. But it shouldn’t be too hard, either yes you want to become fit or no. Which is it.

Stay With It

Now if you are still reading this hopefully you have decided that you want to become fit. If so then you are going to have to hold on to that resolve we just discovered. This is the trick that has helped millions of people. Remember that moment when you decided that you wanted to be fit. Hold that memory in your mind every time you have to deal with a tempting situation.

Written by: Elizabeth La H

As a parent we are responsible for teaching our children skills that will help them to grow and eventually go out on their own and make decisions by themselves. We teach our children to share with others, speak kindly and respectfully to adults and the difference between right and wrong morally. We also teach our children to add and subtract, spell words, read books and more. Parents are also responsible for teaching their children why and how to eat healthy for a lifetime.

In order to be a healthy eater you need to be well educated on what healthy eating looks like and why it is so important. Education on a healthy diet and food is not only learning about calorie intake and how to calculate grams of fat or how to read a nutritional label. Healthy eating also includes knowledge of the importance of a well balanced diet and why you should only eat certain foods and drink in moderation.

Unfortunately because of our fast track lifestyles fast food is often times a big part of modern day life. The cheapest and easiest foods are usually those that are also high in fat, calories, and additives that are not part of a well balanced diet. Most children if given the choice between a healthy snack or meal and “junk” food are more often than not going to choose the latter.

Below are some tips and tricks for encouraging your kids to eat those fruits, vegetables and grains that are so vital to a well balanced diet. Try as best as you can to educate your children along the way as to why these healthy food choices are so important and how easy it can be to make the healthy choices.

Sneak the healthy food in. Add spinach as a topping to their pizza, or offer them muffins for breakfast made from bananas or apples. Be creative with your recipes and substitute some basic ingredients for pureed fruits and vegetables.

Add ingredients to vegetables and fruits. Sometimes raw vegetables and fruits need a little extra to taste better and more satisfying. Add ranch dip to a serving of broccoli and carrots. Or add peanut butter and raisins to celery sticks for an afternoon snack. For breakfast you can add fresh cut fruit to yogurt or cereal.

Plan Ahead. It pays off both health wise and financially to plan ahead when it comes to snacks and eating out while on the run. Keep a nice stock of healthy, non-perishable snacks in your car so that in case the kids get hungry or you make an extra stop while running errands there is something healthy and convenient to eat. If you plan to be gone for the day pack lunches and drinks in a cooler and bring it with you, when the time comes you can stop and break for a healthy lunch. Eating healthy on the go is easy to do if you just take some extra time to plan ahead.

Substitute when it comes to the sweet tooth. Curb sweet tooth cravings with low fat and sugar free treats such as pudding, jello, ginger snaps, angel food cake, and frozen yogurt. Eating fruit when craving something sweet is a great way to make sure you and your family are eating the recommended daily amount of 2 cups per day. Add variety to keep things new, such as frozen, canned, fresh and dried fruits. Drinking fruit juice is also an option but be sure to use moderation when doing so due to the excess sugar found in most fruit juices.

Grocery shop alone. Doing your shopping on your own is the easiest way to shop, as children and sometimes spouses are usually the ones requesting the junk food. Shopping alone will prevent this, and ensure that you only buy the foods you need. Another suggestion for when you go grocery shopping is to plan a weekly menu of meals and healthy snacks, list the ingredients and foods you will need for that week and buy just those items. This will not only help you to stock your home with healthy food but will also save you dollars at the register.

Being a role model to your children is vital when it comes to eating healthy and making smart choices when it comes to taking care of our bodies. It may not always be an easy task getting kids to eat what they should but in time it will become a way of life for them and they will recognize that the healthier they eat, the better they feel. Be patient and at times a little creative with your children and you can be rest assured that you have done your best to help your child(ren) develop a love of healthy foods for the rest of their lives.

The moist heat opens up pores and allows toxins to exit the body while also loosening the lungs.

Many world class spas have these facilities available for their guests to use during their stay at the spa.

These types of services were designed in order to accommodate the guests’ relaxation desires and needs.

I have worked in a few different spas and visited many. The steam rooms and saunas are different in the senses chosen and physical appearance but the attire is always the same, a simple towel, bathing suit or nothing at all.

Of course you will want to take a towel with you to sit on or lay on but it is not necessary to stay wrapped up in it once inside. At first this is a foreign environment but if you stick it out long enough you may allow yourself enough time to actually relax.

Upon my first few visits to the spa I was shy and uncomfortable and then the thought came to me, “when in Rome do what the Romans do”.

Why should this not apply here as well? After all were the Romans not wise in creating the Roman baths? They did have some wonderful ideas that deserve to be recognized.

Most resort spas have workout facilities attached to them. You may want to get in your exercise before entering the spa for your services.

If you head straight to the steam room or sauna there is no need to shower off before entering as long as you stay on your towel.

However, please remember out of respect for the kind people that will be pampering you always make sure to shower off prior to any spa services.

Summer is coming and before you know it you will be getting those dreaded sunburns. Make sure you are prepared everywhere you go with sunscreen in your purse.

It is especially a good idea to have sunscreen on hand when you have children. It is just too difficult to keep them out of the sun so apply the sunscreen and let them be.

Remember that it needs to be reapplied every 3-4 hours. If you are planning to spend all day at the pool then you may need to apply it more than once.

Many places provide shade next to pools now. Reserving cabanas are great ways to minimize the amount of time your skin sees the sun. If you are smart about it you can literally spend all day at the pool and come out with beautifully protected skin.

If you should happen to notice your skin getting a little pink then that is your signal to take cover.

Sunburns are miserable and cause permanent damage to your skin. If you are not finished at the pool or outside it would be wise to spend the rest of the time under some shade.

If you are not finished at the pool or outside it would be wise to spend the rest of the time under some shade. Same goes for exercising outside in the hot summer sun. If you have bright white skin and you choose to go for a 4 mile run without sunscreen you will most likely get a sunburn.

You may want to consider working out under the protection of your home during the summer months. There are many great treadmills and workout equipment available for home use.

I actually keep my treadmill and workout equipment in my garage for convenience purposes. I find I use it more often when it is already out.

If there are summer days where you need to work out at home or outside then by all means do but at least provide yourself the option of working out inside or under a shaded area.

This way your skin will be protected from the hot rays of the sun and your workout can go on without interruption.

The seeds of this weed-like herb are known for their immense health benefits. The following post throws more light on the health benefits of Psyllium.

Cure for Constipation

Psyllium seeds serve as a natural cure for constipation. These seeds expand when they are exposed to water; this in turn can soften stool in the colon. Psyllium helps in eliminating hard stools naturally. Doctors prescribe psyllium seed husk supplements to help relieve a host of health problems namely irritable bowel syndrome, constipation, diarrhea and diverticular disease. In fact, psyllium is one of the most important ingredients in a number of laxatives that are sold over the counter. In its capacity as a bulk laxative, psyllium serves a dual purpose in the body – it removes the waste and restores the ideal volume of bacteria in the intestinal tract.
Reduces Cholesterol Levels

Psyllium can help reduce one’s blood cholesterol level; one of the prime reasons for serious health problems such as stroke and coronary heart disease. The dietary fiber content in psyllium is mainly responsible for absorbing and preventing cholesterol from entering your bloodstream. This can prevent the clogging of arteries and deposit of fats that can impede with blood circulation in the body.

Haemorrhoid Relief

Its nature to soften stools and eliminate the same easily makes psyllium an effective cure for health issues such as haemorrhoids. Pressing down hard during a bowel movement is one of the root causes of haemorrhoids. Psyllium can help overcome this problem effectively by easing the elimination of stools. It can also heal this condition effectively.

Type 2 Diabetes Relief

Research has indicated that psyllium is an effective cure for type 2 diabetes. When taken after meals, psyllium is known to regulate insulin production and blood glucose levels. However, it pays to consult your doctor before taking this supplement if you are a diabetic.

Psyllium Aids Weight Loss

Psyllium is often prescribed as a supplement to aid weight loss. Psyllium helps people on the Atkin’s diet to lose weight by providing adequate fiber that they may not get otherwise. Fiber improves the body’s metabolic functioning and its ability to get rid of waste matter. The best advantage of including this natural health supplement in your weight loss program is that it is not associated with any major side effects.

How to take Psyllium

Psyllium can cause drug interactions, so, you should wait for at least 2 hours after taking your prescribed medication before taking it. You should drink 8-10 glasses of water every day when you are taking this supplement. If you suffer from any type of intestinal problems, you should avoid taking this supplement. To be on the safer side, everyone should make it a point to consult their health care provider before starting on this natural health supplement.

Psyllium can be purchased in seed form or powder form at health food stores both online or offline. It is also sold as capsules in supplement stores and pharmacies.

Written by: Natasa Denman

Instant gratification, quick fix, magic bullet or a magic pill is the most sought after solution to any problem. We all hope that it exists, but deep down know that there really is no such thing. And if there is, it often leads to the path of doom.

There are two motivators in life and those are: pain and pleasure. There is a well- known fact that people will do more to avoid pain than to experience pleasure. But what happens when two pains or two pleasures appear next to each other. Which one will motivate you? Let me explain…

When on a weight loss journey the focus and the challenge is to overcome the instant pleasure of indulging in junk food or to avoid the instant pain that exercise may bring along. Unfortunately this is where most people come unstuck, as focusing on an instant fix/pleasure or avoiding instant pain will keep them stuck at the same or higher weight for years.

On the flip side is delayed pain and delayed pleasure. Delayed pain means that you can potentially get diagnosed with a life threatening disease or have a heart attack due to being overweight.

Delayed pleasure is having your ideal body with which you gain increased confidence, self-esteem, or the ability to wear new smaller clothes and experience an improvement in your relationships. Doesn’t that sound great?

Knowing this now which one will you choose to focus on? Instant pain/pleasure or delayed pain/pleasure. Having the awareness of this, you now have a choice and the ability to ask yourself the question next time you find yourself with a craving at the pantry/fridge: What am I choosing to focus on, instant or delayed?

Delayed pain and pleasure will give you your life back as well as your body and health. Instant pain and pleasure will keep you stuck in that rut, low on energy, confidence and a ticking time bomb that may go off unexpectedly.

So why is it so hard to focus on the delayed outcome? I believe because it doesn’t seem real, it’s distant in the future and not as tangible as the instant outcome. It may happen and it may not. It’s the unknown.

To overcome this visualise and affirm to yourself what the future will hold for you, of course in a positive way. Surround yourself with pictures of health, people that have the results you are after and educate yourself around your mindset. Get to know yourself and work out your triggers once and for all.

Remember these two principles in everything you want to pursue or change in your life. It works the same way. It will save you tons of time and unnecessary frustration in moving you toward your goals.

Accept the fact that there really is not a quick fix and that a journey to success in any field is a marathon, not a sprint.

I like to give options in my recipes as you will see. Replacement ingredients for those that may not have that particular ingredient, or just don’t like to use it. If you have any questions about my recipe, please don’t hesitate to contact me from my info at the bottom of this post.

Italian Tomato Potato soup 2 ways

Serves 4 (if not more)

Category recommendations: Main dish, Lunch, Brunch, Soup’s, Sides, Vegetarian, Meatless Monday’s

prep time: less than 45-60 minutes

Ingredients:

4 fresh Roma Tomatoes finely chopped: Discard excess juices (set aside)

3 Large russet potatoes Peeled, diced and set aside

2 large clove of Garlic peeled and finely diced

1 small (or half a medium) sized Vidalia sweet onion, finely diced

1 Tablespoon basil (fresh is best but you can use dried herb)

2 Tablespoons of white wine (not cooking wine, drinking wine) any brand will do.. I use a Cheap Moscoto for a sweet flavor, but it is up to you. Barefoot Moscoto is only $6 here) OMIT this if you do not believe in alcohol in dishes.

1 slice of Shitakee Mushroom finely diced (you know, the kind at the grocery store already sliced that look like mega giant mushrooms?.. Yeah, those..)

2 packets Swansons Flavor boost (Vegetable) or 2 Tablespoons Vegetable stock paste

1 qt of water

1 Tablespoon Real unsalted butter

2 Tablespoons Olive oil

about 3-4 teaspoons of grated parmesan to sprinkle on top before serving

Directions:

1) in a medium sized fry pan set on medium-low heat, add Olive oil, heat for a minute then add minced garlic and onion until soft and golden. Set aside until potatoes are done cooking.

2) Meanwhile, put water in pot and add a few drops of oil into the water along with a pinch of salt, add potatoes (if fresh not canned) and bring to a rolling boil, allow to boil for 30 minutes or until potato piece splits with little effort when poke with a fork. (** if using canned potatoes, bring water to boil add potatoes along with step 3.

3) once potatoes are soft add the rest of the ingredients and seasonings including onion and garlic. Cover and let sit on low for 30 minutes, allowing it to cook down a bit. You want the potatoes to be falling apart at this point, stir it up to break up the potatoes a bit making the soup a little thicker. (see below for alternatives)

4) Serve in bowls for each person, make with a side of French bread or garlic toast.

* Optional: you can puree the soup to make a nice thick creamy soup if you don’t like chunky soups

** hints: Don’t have fresh ingredients but you do have canned: see this replacements chart:

Tomato: 1 – 16oz can of Diced Tomato Juice Drained

Potato: 3- 16oz can of diced potatoes – drained

Garlic: dried / dehydrated - rehydrate by adding 2 Tablespoon into 1/4 cup of water. let sit for 15 minutes then drain excess liquid off and set aside or Garlic In a jar pre-minced – use 1 Tablespoon

Onion: dried/dehydrated – rehydrate by adding 4 Tablespoons dried onion bits to 1/2 cup of water. Let sit for 15 minutes then drain excess liquid off and set aside while doing other prep work

WINE: dont believe in it, or just dont like cooking with Wine? well you can use 1 teaspoon of a sweet vinaigrette like raspberry vinaigrette in it’s place. Be creative for a different flavor here. almost anything will work good.

Mushroom: Don’t have fresh Shitakee? It’s okay, don’t run out to the store just yet. Do you have canned button mushrooms, or dehydrated mushrooms? For canned just drain a small can and set aside, for the dehydrated, soak in 1/2 cup of water for 20 minutes, then finely dice and set aside

*** hints: add some other veggies such as diced carrot, diced asparagus, finely chopped fresh baby spinach to make a fabulous Fiber filled Mixed veggie soup.

I went out and bought a pilates mat and an exercise ball because going to the gym isn’t always practical. Today’s world is too crazy to waste precious time traveling to the gym and back when I can get in a perfectly good workout at home.

I like to start by stretching first. Next I incorporate a few pilates moves like the pilates 100, corkscrew, single leg stretch, and the open leg rocker.

This helps my muscles to wake up by engaging my core and focusing on my breathing. Being able to keep your breathing calm and continuous can be a challenge sometimes but it will help you exercise much more effectively.

Learn to control your breathing. In through your nose and out through your nose. You need to be able to focus on every move you expect your body to perform all while keeping your breathing calm and even.

Exercising in the home can be a joy (if you do not look at all of the things you need to get done during that day). This is why the art of focusing and breathing is so important.

If you do not meditate well and block out the things around you your mind and body will suffer. You will not learn how to deal with stress in appropriate manners. Life will soon consume you and take over quickly and it will be relentless.

There are many exercises that can be done with an exercise ball so here are a few of my favorites:

Holding the ball between your ankles while laying on your back on the pilates mat, every other time you sit up you throw the ball from your ankles to your hands and catch it. You do this back and forth several times throwing the ball from your hands to your ankles and your ankles back to your hands. This is a great workout for your core and helps with coordination as well.

Sit on the edge of the ball and lean backwards for sit ups that protect your back from the hard floor. Your core has to work to control the ball from rolling out under you while you do your sit ups.

Place the ball on the edge of the mat and roll over the ball on your stomach. Walk your hands forward till your ankles are resting on the ball but your hands are still on the mat. This will help your hands not to move or slip. Slowly pull the ball in towards you and back out again. This one definitely presents a challenge. It is not easy to keep the ball under your ankles when moving it towards you and away from you.

If you are looking for ideas to exercise at home there are plenty of other ideas. It is ok to change up your workouts once in a while. Even if you enjoy your time at the gym it is nice to have the option of change sometimes.

Plus if you are always going to the gym to exercise your children may never actually see you in action. It is always much easier to teach them good health habits when they can watch you themselves. You can also invite them to join you and open the moment to build your parent-child relationship.
