Guest Post: Tips for Getting Kids to Eat Healthy Foods

Written by: Elizabeth La H

As a parent we are responsible for teaching our children skills that will help them to grow and eventually go out on their own and make decisions by themselves. We teach our children to share with others, speak kindly and respectfully to adults and the difference between right and wrong morally. We also teach our children to add and subtract, spell words, read books and more. Parents are also responsible for teaching their children why and how to eat healthy for a lifetime.

Exercising at Home

I went out and bought a pilates mat and an exercise ball because going to the gym isn’t always practical. Today’s world is too crazy to waste precious time traveling to the gym and back when I can get in a perfectly good workout at home.

I like to start by stretching first. Next I incorporate a few pilates moves like the pilates 100, corkscrew, single leg stretch, and the open leg rocker. (more…)

Guest Post: Wizards Guide to Cleaning

Written by: Aimee Coppock

No wonder some children don’t want to clean up or do housework, it’s boring and can be hard work. However, put a ‘magic wand’ in their hands and make a game of it and they’ll be begging you to let them clean!

Magic Wand Didn’t Clean Hogwarts

If you haven’t discovered what wizards at Hogwarts might have actually cleaned up with when the wands didn’t work, now is the time. Cleaning using steam power fits nicely in to the whole Hogwarts setting however; it’s a truly modern approach. The joy that is steam cleaning has finally caught up with the 21st century.  Long a favourite with professional cleaning companies, steam cleaners are now widely available for domestic use and have become increasingly affordable over the last few years.  If your home (or school for wizards) is subjected to hard wear and tear that comes as standard with a family, then a steamer will be a one bit of labour saving domestic equipment that’ll you come to appreciate.  Here are some of my own answers to “Frequently Asked Questions”. Protect Children From Second Hand Smoke

My mother grew up in a home where her father smoked around his children. She suffered with horrible asthma because of the second hand smoke she was exposed to at a very young age. She is still bothered by her asthma to this day.

Of course back then there was no way to know or prove that it was the second hand smoke she was exposed to for so long that caused her such problems.

I have a beautiful little 4 yr old niece that has a difficult time breathing due to second hand smoke. She is surrounded by it day and night. I cannot prove she has developed asthma or if she is allergic to the smoke. What I do know is that her mother is an avid smoker and will pick up a cigarette with the child sitting on her lap. Creating Great Oral Hygiene

Take the time to form good habits folks. If you can learn to create good oral hygiene you will never be sorry because the result is a happy healthy mouth.

It is important to educate our young children about good oral hygiene so they will remember how to care for their mouth and form great oral hygiene habits they can carry with them through out their entire life.

The chances of them remembering how to care for their teeth and gums and practicing these good habits long term are much greater if they are encouraged within their home. Practice+patience+practice makes perfect.

It is also a fabulous idea to set a good example if you wish your children to develop great oral hygiene habits. We all know children will copy what they see. (more…)

Dental Hygiene and Your Health

Dental hygiene speaks volumes about a person. It can give you clues into their personal life an even tell you if they are lazy or careless.

If someone cannot find the time to floss or brush their teeth they probably cannot take the time for many other important things in life.

Proper dental care also includes regular dental check-ups. Your dentist cannot help you prevent painful cavities or abscess teeth on their own.

If you do not take the necessary time to properly care for your teeth and gums you will end up with numerous issues inside your mouth. Gingivitis has become increasingly more common.

In fact gingivitis has grown to be a very popular problem today because so many people have not had dental hygiene education or they are simply too lazy to put aside time to care for their teeth. (more…)

Healing Touch

Last week I attended a lecture class at our local college about how the brain develops when we are born and the differences in premature newborns and full-term newborns.

Most all of the information we know about the brain and how it develops has come from the last 15 years of study.

Dr.’s and nurses in the NICU have had to adjust to some of these new techniques so they can best care for the newborns.

In order to provide an environment for premature babies to develop effectively and quickly special attention must be payed to the areas the babies occupy.

The Dr.’s and nurses that work in the space surrounding the premature babies constantly need to be aware of the way the babies respond to them. Bright lights and loud noises must be minimal or not at all. (more…)

Healthy Communication With Your Children

Parenting can be a challenge for those who do not communicate effectively. I suggest if this is an area you struggle with take a communication class or two and provide the knowledge for yourself to grow and improve.

Children will not communicate with you if they feel threatened or challenged in any way. Make sure as a parent you are creating a safe and loving environment for your children to have the desire to let you into their lives everyday.

It takes daily communication for your children to build up the willingness and trust that speaking to their parents will result in a positive way.

Healthy communication takes time to achieve and the more you practice the easier it will become. Be patient in waiting to see if your knowledge has become effective in your daily communication with your children. (more…)

Good Sleep

How does a person get good sleep?  Well, I have made a lifestyle change in the last 2 weeks, a big one.  I now have a bed time.  I want to share what I have learned with those of you who are having a difficult time getting your sleep.

At first I was not sure if I would be able to handle this new change in a successful manner.  I did not want to be a grouch at work, hinder my learning, or be short with my family members. (more…)

Caring for Your Teeth

Good dental health is something we all want but do we really take the time to create the proper hygiene habits to have it?  Regular six month checkups and cleanings should be part of our dental care if we are serious about our dental health.

Taking the time to floss after every meal or at the very least before going to bed at night is the best way to prevent cavities from forming.  It is important to form good health habits for your mouth so you can have healthy teeth and gums as well as nice breath.
